DECK EXPANSION PROJECT--Byron Center, MI

It is time to enjoy the outdoors again and a great way to do this is by building or expanding a deck. This month's featured project is a bilevel deck which originally had the upper level only. Bill designed this deck to project an open feel. He achieved this by three ways.

The first being a small platform that extended serving a dual purpose of starting the stairs but mainly leaving much room between it and the window above so that the view from the inside looking out was undisturbed. The second way to create this open feel was by the design/build of handrails and the material chosen. The handrail on the second story gave a lighter feel by use of black metal spindles. Not only does this achieve negative space, but puts emphasis towards the landscape. The absence of railing on the lower level allows the eye to flow into the yard without constriction. The last way is the construction of the lower level of steps. Easily seen here, the rise of the steps are minimal, complimentary to those found in nature and allowing easy access into the yard.
